Berenice Badillo, Sandra Carmona,  Selina Calvo and Jennifer Clay

Chicano Park houses the largest collection of Chicano murals in the world. XoQUE restored a historic mural created by Berenice Badillo in 1997, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016. This project involved painting on polytab, installing the mural on seven levels of scaffolding, painting on the concrete, as well as closing a part of the Coronado bridge with a boom lift. “Tu Puedes Mija” (You can do it Daughter) is a 70 foot mural, the tallest mural in Chicano Park painted by women, for women, about women. It is the only mural with art facing the Coronado bridge.

The original mural was painted on canvas with house paint and pasted with wallpaper glue. There was no painting at the time because Caltrans wanted to make the pillars earthquake safe by destroying the murals. Berenice, 23 years old painted the mural on canvas as a protest and pasted it up in one day. The mural was her third painting and she borrowed scaffolding and a van to paste the mural 47 feet up high.
